For the Love of Big Brother.
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 by Admiral_CoeymanAs the main character of “1984″ can tell you, it is not enough to simply obey big brother; you have to love big brother. I am too lazy to look up his name even though it would only take me a few minutes of time on the Internet. It does not hurt my point to leave out the identification of a fictional character who is a subject of Big Brother. My point is that we are becoming subjects of big brother. Big Brother cares about us and regulates the minutiae of our lives for our own good because Big Brother alone knows what is best for us.
Big Brother is the secular ideal of God. What Big Brother represents is a beneficent, nearly omniscient overlord who has the responsibility to lord over us as the philosopher king of our age. When you look around you, do you not see this in action? This is an election year in this part of the world. Politicians, other than Girdy and Raze, are telling us how they are going to use the unlimited power available only in Government to save us from each other and ourselves.
You would think that this would be an easy time for a stand up philosopher such as myself, but that is not the case. Stand Up philosophy is designed to be light hearted. Whenever I get into thinking deep thoughts on your screen, I drift away from my goal. Remember that these tirades are fillers for the really important things that Joel has to say to his audience. I would need the length of a book that I am far too lazy to write in order to adequately explore the ideas that I can only hint at in this space.
Barring somebody popping up and giving me an advance to devote the next three months to writing a book on the subject, my musings in this space will have to suffice. It was not the election that inspired me. The church that I joined over a year ago recently had a business meeting and there was a delineation between who wanted to keep authority with the congregation and the part of the congregation that would hand that authority over to three governing deacons. Those of us who wanted to keep the vote with the congregation lost the vote. I am not bitter or writing against the right of any group of people to determine how they wish to be ruled over.
We now have far too easy of a time giving over authority to experts. Our surrender comes cloaked in the best of intentions. Big Brother knows our needs and always acts in our best interest by virtue of his love for us. It is not by chance that Big Brother has the name ‘Big Brother.’ Is it not big brother’s job to keep a loving eye out to watch over little brother?
