Fighting Theory with Theory

Friday, February 1st, 2008 by Admiral_Coeyman

I just had my third editorial published on Associated Content’s website. I have written only three pieces for the site and all three of them turned out to be editorials. There was also a news site that I visit infrequently where I never failed to have a letter to the editor published. No, I am not applying for a job with this tirade. Stand up philosophy is an avocation for me.

The reason that I bring this up, without going into the contents of that article, is that my paper caused me to question my own laziness. This article could have been published in a more scholarly part of the site. As I wrote it, I thought about how many footnotes I should have inserted into it. There are no footnotes in it. Did I do that only because I am lazy?

My paper dealt with people who consider a theory valid because they can argue that the theory has not been put into practice the way that it was published in the commercial for it. Is that ironic, then? I did not put as much effort into researching the paper because I did not consider myself worth taking seriously. Not being taken seriously gives me room to ramble on. Since I did not put enough work into the paper to list resources, I simply submitted it as an editorial.

Am I unique in this? Did Martin Luther think to say that his famous posting was only an editorial? I doubt that it would have helped considering the secular time that he lived in. It is just that my mind is wondering down dangerous streets and I am curious. How much else is out there escaping due scrutiny by taking on the mantle of opinion?

Well, my hands are freezing so I should try to reach something resembling a conclusion. I am also at my length limit for a tirade. Just think about the difference between editorial and philosophy as you listen to the pundits of your day. Are they more than they seem and hiding behind the assertion of their simplicity? Do they influence your thinking more because you do not think about their words?
