Myopic Visionary

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 by admiral

Have you ever tried to sink half of a ship? That is the kind of question that stand up philosophers would ask. It did get you to read this far, did it not? Well, I do have a reason to ask. I have gone a full paragraph without saying it.

Myopia refers to being short sighted. In the thinking of my age, I have noticed a great deal of myopia. The basis of our ideals often involve taking a narrow view of the world around us as though nothing in reality is connected. Therefore, I asked if you have ever tried to sink half of a ship. When half a ship sinks, both halves go down.

This is often referred to as not seeing the forest for the trees. You look at the trees in specific and do not see fact that the whole forest is a single thing that extends to more than the mere trees that make it up. Not seeing the forest for the trees does not go far enough toward what I am trying to say. What I am seeing is a hostile action. Our own greed has driven us to the belief that punishing part of the population for its successes would make the whole world a better place.

We have failed to see that you cannot sink just half of a ship. The people that we try to bring down to our level are part of the support system that is holding us up. Every part of a system is connected in more than cosmetic ways. No matter what you may believe about the age of the Earth, odds are very good that it was not born yesterday. There are reasons why things are the way that they are.

Love is not the only blind emotion. Being human does not allow you to escape some degree of this blindness. However; should we be trying to see the world around us only in terms of this blindness? The most dangerous motivation in the universe is not open malice. Greater danger lies with an honest desire to do good in our ignorance.
