The Eyes of Art

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 by Admiral_Coeyman

I may not have mentioned this before, but I am currently with the technical ministry at the church I joined about a year ago. Stand up philosophy is not my entire life, although it is close to it. This is hardly a secret considering that I list my work with this ministry on my personal website. There is even a link to the technical ministry website on my personal page. That being written, I can now get to the subject of this tirade.
You may be surprised how much it changes your artistic perception when you become involved in an artistic endeavor. As a little secret that I will now let you in on, I feel that I am partially deaf in my left ear. I have passed every hearing test that I have taken, but I still feel that something is wrong. That is why my work in the sound ministry is such a surprise to me. After a few months of training, I am mixing the recording of the second service.
Time has been lacking for me to read over all of the manuals the way that I would like to. I have been a much slower student than I would like to be. At one time, I was a very good student. Now, I feel like an athlete who has lost a limb that nobody else could see. Could this be the same feeling that all intellectual athletes experience when they burn out?
After this time, I find myself listening more acutely to sounds. I am even taking better care of my hearing. The point that I am getting at is that all artists experience this enhanced perception in their chosen art. You are not much of an artist if you are completely satisfied in your own creations. An artist will see the defects that nobody else will notice.
As a writer, when I could write, I noticed this in my writing. Each time I transcribed my own work, I would make changes to improve the flow of my manuscripts. Now I do the same thing with music. I have even been working with the equalizers on my mp3 audiobooks to improve clarity of the voice. This is fascinating.
