Barney Bad Night.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 by admiral

Barney sat uneasily in his chair as though dreading the coming of the morning. A moment of sleep, far less rest than his body needed, would allow the sun to instantly climb to the point in the sky that Barney feared. He could not have done anything that bad, could he? What could Barney have done that so peaked his fear that he would avoid sleeping to prolong this one night as though it was his last night? Even Barney did not know.

What keeps you up at night? I’ve heard of children having nightmares over global warming. The obesity epidemic is so large that young, elementary school children are now being diagnosed with anorexia. Have we come so far that the world is now so safe that we can live our lives in fear of such amorphous threats? It is a safe land that has the freedom to fear what it can neither see nor feel.

As a stand up philosopher, I do sit up some nights thinking these tirades through. I know that they look like small chunks of mindless dribble that I threw together in half an hour. That is what my thinking has come to. It is not the loss of clarity in my thought that I most fear; however, it is something that I dread. There are so many other people with such genuine and legitimate need, have I any room to pray comfort in my petty problems?

There are people living in the dark parts of the world who have lost the things that we complain about having to settle for. Look for their downcast eyes in the shadows and around the corners of the places in which you live. Why is it that we do not thank the author of life for the blessings that we have when we live in clear sight of real need? Are we a people that whines as a spoiled child at not getting his own way when he has more than he needs?

If we are going to spend sleepless nights in worry, why not find real things to worry about? We can make a difference in the world and we select not to. Is there nobody in need that is in range of your helping hand? Why go without sleep over your fallen, unfulfilled greed when you can have the blessing of being the blessing that you were created to be?
