Super-Empowered

Friday, March 9th, 2007 by Admiral_Coeyman

If you were offered real power over people, would you accept it? I am not talking authority, but real influence and an unnatural control over the people that you come into contact with. What if you could dominate the minds of the people you meet? Would you have the ability to resist?

Have you ever said, “there should be a law?’ Do you think, even when you do not speak it aloud, that people should do things that they do not? I’m confident in stating, on the record, that almost everybody does. When stand up philosophers are not watching and writing about people, we are people. We know your thoughts because we share those thoughts.

In Man’s fallen state, it is only natural to want to play God. This is not a good thing; however, it is a true thing. Almost everybody wants to rule the world. People who do not want to rule the world are the best equipped people to rule the world, although having the authority to rule the world would corrupt them until they lose competence for the job. You are lucky to know one person, who having never held an unnatural power over others, would not want that power.

Maybe you have an easy time denying this. Have you ever had to make the choice? When you refused the offer, did you believe that you could have what you had been offered? Power, once tasted, is hard to relinquish. Even when we start out with the best of intentions, our use of power always turns dark.

Evil, when compared to crack, makes crack cocain seem like a pocket full of cough drops. You use the power once and getting what you want has effects that you had never considered. Another use of power, again with the best of intentions, is required to fix those problems. Each use of power must be larger than the one preceding it. The human mind is too limited to catch all the problems that we cause. You will always cause harm when you use any measure of power. Maybe that is why we were given so little power.

Look at what we have used our power for. We build nuclear bombs, but shun nuclear power. Given the ability to heal, we kill the most defenseless of our children. Now that we can vote ourselves benefits from the public treasury, our votes go to the candidate who offers us the largest bribes. It is always what the other guy does that needs to be forbidden.

Our only modern sin is feeling bad about yourself. So let us pity the poor superhero who much now be written afraid of his own power. With great power comes great sacrifice. You will not survive this sacrifice if you are unsure of your choice.
