Super Bowling
Monday, February 5th, 2007 by admiralSomething interesting just came up. Why do companies spend millions of dollars for commercials, during the Super Bowl, that will never air again? These are not bad commercials, if commercials can be good. People will be talking about these commercials into next year. Some people actually watch the game only for the commercials.
So, why do companies not play these expensive commercials all year long? Does it really matter that these commercials will be ‘out of season’ once the Super Bowl is over? What humor is in these commercials will project as well in seasons beyond football. Why not use them until the Pro Bowl? Doesn’t that make sense?
Furthermore, if the commercials for the Super Bowl are good enough to get their own show and fan base, why do companies not try to match this performance all year long? Some companies do not have the advertising budget to advertise during the Super Bowl. For them, advertising during the rest of the year could be their Super Bowl. Why not try to make the commercials that will represent your company to millions of people all year long as good as those commercials that play once during the Super Bowl.
I had the same question about the tutoring services that I hear advertisements for. If they are so good with failing students, then why do we not have them teach in schools? Isn’t the main goal of any industry performance? Education is no different, in this respect, than selling toilet paper. The objective of the company is to do a good job and keep the clients happy so that you keep your current customers get more clients.
Back to my original stand up philosophizing, why aren’t these top commercials used more than once? Football games are played every weekend during the season and people still watch the games. So, why are we stuck with the low grade advertising all but one night of the year? Maybe people would not put so much effort into avoiding commercials if they were more entertaining and less insulting.
