Rebirth of Art.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 by Admiral_CoeymanCan art be reborn? I would not doubt that you have heard is said that there is nothing good on TV. Readers, of my acquaintance have said the same thing about books. It sometimes seems that people who consider themselves to be artists believe that they are too far above us to actually provide what their public really wants. Recently, I heard it said that only a jailer fears escapism.
As I write this, I have just finished posting the next chapter of a western to Pariah Online Magazine. An actual western in the twenty-first century. There are people who still write westerns. Can the western be born-again?
One of the many projects in my queue involves writing a fantasy story in a science fiction setting. Aside from the fact that I am odd enough to think of doing such a thing, I think that I may be able to make it work. If, that is, God grants me the time and the skill to actually write more than the first chapter of anything. I’ve been bad at that, lately.
There is something called third-generation syndrome. Children often break away from their parents and identify with their grandparents. I’m not sure how true that is, but it would make for an odd future. My generation was described as having come to the party just in time to help with the clean up. What I look forward to is a generation that really does something.
Will this lead to the rebirth of art? Will the people who fought the culture of the free world until they became the culture of the free world fall by the wayside? Will tomorrow deliver on the promise of both yesterday and today? Will the western become the genre of the new generation as it was for generations of the past?
I would love to see art born again as the exploration of ideas. My hopes are high that there may be born a generation that will think deeper than its rage. Tomorrow has to be worth the trials of this day. With the rebirth of art, maybe we can escape the intellectual cubicles that we’ve placed ourselves into while we allowed our bodies to suffer the same fate.
Wouldn’t this be a good generation to see the rebirth of the fairy tale? How long has it been since you have heard a tall tale told? What about horror that delves into the things that really frighten adults? Maybe, as a stand up philosopher, I will eventually write something good…
