Shades of Eternity

Monday, December 4th, 2006 by admiral

I saw my shadow cross the room without me. At the time, I was not standing in the same room as the light and the light, as well as my shadow, was in front of me. The truth is that it was a fascinating effect. It was probably a dream, however, it got me thinking an odd thought. Could you imagine being a demon spending all of eternity doing parlor tricks to frighten people? Now that would be a concept that I couldn’t mention anywhere with a swear word filter.

There has been a recent jump in the amount of ‘spam’ on the Internet recently. I have one server in my control that cannot run a web server or the volume of ‘spam’ passing through it would crash the computer. While that server is being attacked with the kind of email that people pay NOT to get, the whole network around it drags. I’m sure that there are network administrators working on harder problems than mine. It is so bad that, if we really do enter an information age, I can see ‘email marketing’ becoming a capital offense.

There is not much difference between a demon being required to do stupid tricks for all of eternity and a person who has to settle for ‘email marketing.’ I cannot speak for you, but I feel sorry for both of them. Maybe it is simple Christian charity, but I see the offense as punishment in itself. “Spam’ has such a bad reputation that it can be used to attack an opponent’s reputation.

When I first came up with the idea of using ‘email marketing’ as a way to disgrace businesses, I was actually thinking that it was only a matter of time before somebody actually did it. My idea was only for a story. I held off writing it in a vain attempt to be the good guy. In the end, I did not want to take the responsibility for inspiring malice between people. It turns out that the ‘Joe Job’ is older than I thought.

While it frees me to write the storyline, and the story in which terrorists derive funding from ‘spamming,’ I would much rather have nobody think of it.
