You Have an Amazing Gift

Friday, November 10th, 2006 by bbbco

Let me tell you something about myself.

I like writing. However, I have not found the time (and sometimes the energy) to write. My classes this semester do not require many papers (I think I have a total of one science paper and some other “papers” that are more or less just facts stringed together).

But now I have a little bit of down time to sit and write about something, and nothing seems to come to mind. Oh, wait. Here is something.

Have you ever thought about science, how much it has revealed of our everyday lives? According to science we can understand the air we breathe, how and why our bodies function, how and why something can heal, how and why something is destroyed. Science has revealed all of these things, and is continuing to reveal more about the world and universe we live in.
But there is still something that science has not been able to reveal, and probably will never be able to reveal: Why and how do we as humans have a conscience, and where does it come from?

The conscience is a tricky thing. It is our very thoughts, our very reason, our very logic for the way we think or act. It is the very thing that condemns ourself and others. It is the very thing that actually decides, “hey, I like [blank]” or “whew! [blank] stinks!”

Conscience is apart of what makes us, well, us. And the interesting thing is, you cannot separate man from his conscience. To do so means death.

Conscience allows us to decide what to do, whether it is right or wrong. Conscience allows us to determine if something is right or wrong. Conscience allows us to determine that something is wrong, but still allows us to choose to do this very thing with full knowledge that it is wrong! Thus conscience is hard-coded with a default law that knows “lying is wrong” or “stealing is wrong”, etc. And our conscience can determine whether it wants to follow this law or disobey it.
Conscience is an amazing gift. But where did conscience come from? How did we get it?

Think about it. Only a higher power could give us such a gift.

Charis,
