Do I Know Me?

Monday, September 18th, 2006 by admiral

It is not a big secret that most of the people here have never met me. That’s only fair because I’ve never met me either. Nobody has ever considered that I might want to meet me. We have never been introduced. How inconsiderate.

What brought on this whole line of inquiry is a remark made by somebody who met me a year ago. Today is the first time that he remembers having seen my last name. I am not sure that he can pronounce it yet, but that is beside the point. So is the fact that I found a reference to my current family surname being Dutch for cow-man. In short for those of us from these United States, cowboy. This is not my original surname.

The Oracle from the Matrix points Neo to a sign that tells him to ‘know yourself.’ Can you actually say that you know yourself? Have you ever seen yourself the way that the people closest to you have? Would you be able to pick yourself out from the crowd? Do the people around you know you better than you do?

It may be possible that we live behind masks that not even our own eyes can pierce. We constantly compare ourselves to the people that we want to be better than, equal to or like. Much of our lives is spent keeping up appearances. Would it be possible for us to worry more about the reality than the illusion? Can we really become better instead of apparently better? I am not even going to address the people who actually want to become worse.

Admitting to a problem is the first step toward a cure. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Do you have enough honesty in your eyes to see yourself as you really are and then to make the changes that you really need? It is easy to be moderate and live with being better than some other guy. Is it your goal in life to stand still or would you rather really reach for the brass ring in life?

Change for change’s sake stems from a lack of clear vision. Nobody is perfect so nobody is perfectly wrong. When you see the truth, you will see both the good and the bad in who you are. Where you go from there is a matter of vision. Which way does your compass point?

If I ever do get an introduction and meet me, how will I be introduced and by whom? Those are deep thoughts to ponder on a Monday. It may take me until Friday to recover. This is entirely too much thinking for a Monday.
