I Refuse
Friday, June 23rd, 2006 by Admiral_CoeymanI will not take what I do not want. Some time ago, I was watching a report on an insignificant man who refused to take a promotion. This guy was a real loser, and a serial killer to boot, but that wasn’t important to my subject. I, for some reason known only to God, took offense at the way people spoke about his refusal to accept a promotion as some kind of serious illness.
Promotions are not a problem with me. If the job pays for what I do, it’s morally upright, and I can really do it, then I’m in. I do not want to feel like a fraud. Money is nothing to me, however, I know that we need it in this society and I’m not against it. My problem was not with what he refused.
My problem was with the fact that everybody who was interviewed in the report had a singular materialist view of success and considered deviation from that formula to be more evil than mass murder. There really are things that are worth more than money. When you spend all of your life in pursuit of wealth, when do you get time to enjoy anything? I suppose that what I’m asking is why I should be considered a failure for not attaining somebody else’s dreams. Can I have no dreams of my own?
Doesn’t it take strength to stand up to the crowd? How much of the evil in the world comes from Man’s unwillingness to stand alone in the face of evil? I consider it worth being called a fool to stand for what is right and true when everybody else is living in denial. Truth does not need anybody’s approval to exist.
For me, I refuse to take what I do not want. It is a small statement that most of the world will never see. Almost nobody likely to read this even knows that I’m out here. And I still stand, alone if I have to, and refuse to accept whatever is offered just because the loudest voices in the crowd tell me that I want it.
