The Loathe Bateau –Prologue
Monday, January 2nd, 2006 by admiralThere is a ship that sails between here and there, in the sea of nowhere. The officers are angels and the men are demons aboard the ‘Calvary.’ While you are a guest on this ship, you are required to walk a mile, 5280 steps, in the shoes of somebody who has wronged you. If, at the end of those steps, you can forgive the sinner without excusing the sin, then the officers will take you ashore. Otherwise, they are not exactly called life boats.
Imagine an old-style, paddle wheel driven gambling ship cruising the sea above Styx. Overhead, the sky is always overcast and each dewdrop is a moment of time. The sun always threatens to rise from the horizon, but seems to more circle the sea than dirty itself by climbing through the uncharted, dark sky. Light is always in short supply in the mists through which ‘Calvary’ follows her course.
On the main deck, there is a card game brewing. The gamblers play with tarot cards as though they control the fate of mortals for their own amusement. Nobody cheats in this game for more reasons than the fact that cheating here is beyond the realm of all that is possible. It is not the game of cards that the men are playing. In this place, the real game, as everybody knows, is chess.
