Wasted Space

Friday, September 2nd, 2005 by joel

It abhors me that I can, on demand, produce a detailed explanation of the entire history of the pop artist Britney Spears from the moment she hit it big in ’97. I suppose some part of me must care enough to retain this information, but for the life of me, I cannot determine why. I curse that portion of our culture that DOES care enough to fund the ongoing investigations into the worlds best looking and also most screwed up people, announcing their discoveries in all forms of media, be they print, internet, television or radio, so that even a reclusive media-phoebe such as myself has ready access to it.
I figure this is part of the reason they are so screwed up. Their lives are a constant performance on and off stage and screen. That’d be enough to mess anyone up.
But this is not an article of sympathy toward the obscenely wealthy and the just plain obscene. This is more an article of sympathy toward our vast and potential-filled minds that is so engorged with trash that the statistically ten-percent that actually works is rendered almost useless. I don’t actually believe that statistic. It is far too widely quoted without any contributing source sited. Also, I happen to know for a fact that we really don’t know that much about the function and purpose of the brain.
The great hero of modernist fiction, Sherlock Holmes, is quoted at his first appearance as not caring to know whether the earth orbited the sun or vice-versa. Such knowledge was just trivia, and served no practical purpose. I gotta say, if we all had that sort of focus on the stuff we learned, our mental accomplishments would be far more rigorous. This sort of distraction is yet another tool of the media warlords to subdue and distract us so we are mindless labor and buying machines, fuel for the engine of capitalism.
I guess I should take this moment to say that I am not a communist. It’s a nice idea, but it would take a population of selfless people, and I really don’t see that happening.
So if you are with me on this one, help me out and lets send letters to our local tabloids telling them to give us less statistical charts of the body-fat ratio of pop-idols, and more, I don’t know, statistics on who would win in a fight between the Hulk and the Thing. Now THAT’S the kind of information we could all use!
