July Forth Explosion

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 by joel

I interviewed a bunch of kids today on their July Forth experience. There were many tales of parades advertising local businesses and, of course fireworks. Lots of those.

The United States of America is a unique nation in many aspects. It’s very young as nations go, and the people’s, while largely consistent of white, English speaking folk, are from an infinite variety of cultural backgrounds. We are also a super-power among nations.

There are, however, a few tidbits of shared cultural background that make our nation great. One of which is that we were, believe it or not, oppressed by a distant superpower that we revolted from and were successful in this revolt.

This sort of remembrance of our own history would serve us well as a cautionary reminder of what it is like to be on the other end of the stick, power-wise. It’s just too bad nobody bothered to tell their kids what the holiday was about.
