Wednesday, April 27th, 2005 by joelI think its time you folks knew about 231. I imagine that at some point, I am going to be able to work its full significance into the comic. However, until then I feel compelled to just out and say it.
Here is the definition of 231 as given by the original text of ‘Secrets of the Universe’:
231: The number 231 has universal significance. It is not that there is anything unique about the number itself. Any number could hold universal significance, 231 just happens to be the one. The significance of this number is that it tends to attract a high number of improbable events. Whenever something so phenomenally improbable that it is close to impossible occurs, you can bet the number 231 is at the heart of it.
To expand on that a bit, you have probably dutifully failed to notice that the bulk of the action within Secrets takes place around room 231 (also known as ‘The Place’). This, while officially the room belonging to Micah and Wes, is the hangout spot of almost every other character in the strip. It contains Micah’s lauded ‘Tech womb’, and is, quite coincidentally I assure you, the center of the universe.
The reason I felt compelled to share this with you is that this Saturday (the 23rd) we received exactly 231 new visits to the website. Improbable, coincidental, and entirely in keeping with the nature of the number. Now you know
