Secrets of the Universe
Friday, September 24th, 2004 by joelGentle Reader, I am now beginning on what I consider to be a somewhat epic journey. That is, I am converting the original ‘Secrets of the Universe’ story into comic form. The full story can be found under ‘links’ on this very page. The way I am doing it, it should fit snuggly into the plotline of the already existing comic. In fact, I have kind of been leading up to this for the last year.
It’s a project not for the weak of heart. It involves converting a story that is forty pages long into a comic. For this reason, I ask you kindly to be patient with me. I guarantee this story is entertaining, but it will also take considerable work on my part, which means that I may end up missing a few comics. I will try to work out some sort of backlog of material so that, for the days I do not make the comic in time, there will be SOMETHING to entertain you.
Also, this does not mean the end of the comic strip you have all come to know and love. It will be back, and when it does come back, it will be sophomore year for our characters.
And so, without further a due, I give you an introduction.
Introduction
“Life is the combined experience of everyone. A set of re-occurring patterns that everyone thinks is unique to him or her, but in reality, shares in common with everybody else. Analogies are made about life all the time, but in fact, no one experience contained IN life can summarize the whole OF life.
“To compare life to one of its parts is somewhat analogous to comparing your body to one of its parts. Example: Joe’s body is like an appendix. It has no obvious purpose and should be removed.
-The Secrets of the Universe
“The Secrets of the Universe is a little known program found in a file on the main computer of a large alien ship. The aliens that carry it did not write it. Nor are they interested in its contents. They are not concerned with understanding the universe, as we are. They think in a logic that is entirely alien to us. They simply use the file as a system off of which their computer can work. Few people, alien or otherwise, even know of its existence, and if they did, it is doubtful they would care. It’s true that “The Secrets of the Universe contains the answers to the questions that most people ask about the nature of things, but people would be much less happy if there where no longer any mysteries left to explore.
So the file remains there, sitting in blissful anonymity, because no one cares to look at the answers they seek. All that, however, is about to change.
