The Lack of Respect for Authority
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004 by bbbcoWell it seems to me that today’s topic is a good one. Finally, no more boring stuff that Joel makes us read about Video Games, Girdy for Prez, Insanity, Marriage, or even the Ends of the Earth. Now we hit the deep waters, the question that drives the elders of our culture crazy. Why does this generation have such a lack of respect for authority? Why do they disregard, despise, and even make fun of the higher powers that have been established and instituted? Why do the members of the Message Board (MB) resort to ridicule and sarcasm in all of their interactions with I, the Almighty Admin of the Message Board? I am (in my opinion) an impartial and competent ruler. I keep things organized and fair. I delete and punish posters who make posting runs, I keep the masses happy. I give suggestions and come up with ways to improve the moral of this posting community. I have even provided several attainable and creative statuses to attain. I have even added a good deal of humor to the site, especially with the plethora of censored words.
And how does this thriving online community respond?
They harass me with their pathetic attempts to ridicule and insult me. And then they accuse me of being the instigator, the rude, cruel despot that doesn’t give a rip about how the MB is doing, whether the people are pleased, or how many newcomers we might have. Do I, the humble manager of a lowly online village really deserve this kind of treatment? Come on people! Cry out to the oppressors! Tell them to stop their rule of tyranny over us, the common working man and woman! Let them know that we work hard at our jobs! We try to please the people! We work hard for this freedom!
And now I shall slink back into my little corner of dorm space and contemplate the meaning of existence as an amoeba of the internet. I digress into the empty gap of cyberspace as the infomercial plays its rhythmic tune: “Visit www.secretsoftheuniverse.net to find out what your existence means. Frank is watching…
