Homepage Exile: Day 8

Wednesday, July 21st, 2004 by joel

With artists, there is a ‘letting-go’ process that occurs with any art they have produced. A painter will produce an extraordinary piece of work and wait for years sometimes to sell it because so much of his life and soul went into it, by way of example. Now there are exceptions. If, for instance, the artists chosen medium is print, then publishing that print is a portion of the creative process. The book or article or whatever isn’t ‘done’ until it is in print and being read by a significant number of people. The same could be said of cartoonists.

I mention this because, due to an unique and perplexing server bug, I have been unable to view my web page upon which you are now reading these words for over a week now. I referred to this problem in a previous article, but I bring it up again as cautionary illustration to both of you guys. There is never something so universally true that it can’t make an exception for you. You’d think in this day and age that, if it is on the internet, than it is accessible to all. However ill fortune can grin wickedly upon any one of you as it has done unto me.

Now I’ve noticed that problems that spontaneously occur for no known reason don’t always spontaneously fix themselves for no known reason. This is a disappointment, because spontaneous and inexplicable problems are a regular part of my life. You may remember my scanner tale. Also, my old computer would destroy one hard-drive a month in a regular progression in freakishly persistent order. We swapped every piece of hardware possible out of that computer and it continued to chew up and spit out one hard-drive a month. Or take these articles, for instance. I have had to start saving them on floppy disk because one day I discovered the computer had decided to stop acknowledging new articles when I went to upload them to my editor. It stopped on article number 53 and has not shown me another article I have saved ever since. This is only with articles for my web page. Anything else I write is saved and displayed just as it always has. Only web page articles no longer show up. It is problems like this that make me wonder why exorcisms for computers and electronic devices are not more common. I would think that would be a big selling point in modern times for the Catholic Church. If I could get the Pope to bless some lubricant and then apply it to my case-fan, I may be rid of these problems once and for all. Just a thought.
