A Year? Already?

Wednesday, July 7th, 2004 by joel

So apparently Secrets of the Universe has been posting comics for a year now. I should probably know this stuff, being the creator and all, but I had to have a fellow web-comic artist point it out to me (that artist being Brian Hart of ‘Disassemblance.’ Check his comic out under ‘links’.) Had I been keeping closer track, I would have done something to celebrate. As it is, I have nothing prepared except to hastily put together this article and pop open a can of coke to celebrate. However, allow me to briefly reflect on the first year of ‘Secrets’. Humor me, this is my baby.

When Secrets began, I was hand drawing the boxes for the comics using a ruler and my own none-too-dependable judgment for what is ‘straight’ line-wise. Eventually I photocopied four boxes that were about as straight as I could make them and have been using those four boxes ever since. Of course, those particular boxes are NOT straight as the Duke has pointed out to me on multiple occasions. If someone could draw four boxes with straight lines and send me a photocopy it would be of inestimable value to this website.

I got an intern around September of last year whose total contributions to this website consist of about three articles of randomness rivaled only by Alien Logic itself. He posted a few times on the message board and also just recently helped me scan and color some images for the card game. Thanks Intern, you shant soon be forgotten.

I made a playable card game based mostly on the Secrets stories. Though it is playable in its current form, it is still missing a school. I am working on it, Anthony.

Girdy ran for president for a while. You can still write him in on the vote, but don’t expect any more campaigning from him. Five comics, six banners, and one article were ENOUGH! If that doesn’t sway the American Public, then you guys are blockheads!

On April 2, 2004, I changed something about the comic. I began using the computer to insert text into the comics rather than lettering them by hand. Although it was hackneyed and ugly at first, I improved it over time to the point that I think it looks pretty good today. I did this not only to improve the understandability of the strip, but also to make sure I always spelled the words in my bubbles right. Spelling is, to me, what Lex Luthor is to Superman. Why Webster thought it was a good idea to standardize the English language is beyond me.

And then, most recently, I did started this limited series Comic Book which seems to be getting a modestly good response.

Okay, that’s it, reminiscence over. Never cared for the stuff anyway.
