Let us mourn comics long dead, alas

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2003 by joel

I entered college full of pep, vinegar, and yes,
just a little bit of vim.? One
of the first things I did (actually, the forth thing I did) was to go to
the student newspaper headquarters and plug my comic.?
It was a comic I had worked throughout my High School career
developing and nurturing like a small animal rescued from the cruel
wild.? The comic was called,
fittingly, ?Brownie the Bunny.’?
It was a comic featuring the zany adventures of a
tennis-shoe-wearing bunny rabbit and his zany friends including a
squirrel, a chipmunk, a cat, and a dog.? Now I know that many of you, like my parents, are wondering
?Why?? Why did such a
beautiful comic strip have to perish?’?
Well I will tell you.

For reasons beyond my ken, the college newspaper
rejected my comic idea, insisting that the type of comics they were
interested in included things having to do with college life.?
At the time I didn’t know anything about college life, and
furthermore I was stunned by their blatant censorship.?
Wandering off, I became downcast and cynical.

The college strip I eventually fathered was born
out of much the same spirit as ?Brownie’; that being an in-depth
look at the relationship between man and animals.?
You see, the ?Secrets’ comic strip was inspired by the site
of a Walt Disney cartoon.? Cinderella
to be exact.? As I watched
the mice and birds cavorting about in Cinderella’s bedroom, thoughts
came into my head, as thoughts are prone to do.?

I thought ?Now Cinderella is sort of a
housekeeper, or so it would seem, and housekeepers generally discourage
the presence of mice, birds, and other such vermin in their houses.?
Nor are such pests usually as cute and helpful as they seem to be
to her.’

And as those thoughts past through my brain, I was
suddenly struck with the notion of the cockroaches living in our dorm
dancing around the keyboard writing my thesis paper for me while singing
?whistle while you work’.? The
rest, as they say, is history.
