Controlling Socially Inept People

Friday, August 8th, 2003 by joel

Having received a college education I know a few
more useless things than I would otherwise.? One of these useless
things that I know is that there is an actual psychological disorder
that makes certain people unable to notice social cues.? This is no
great revelation to those of you who didn’t already know this fact.?
We’ve all met those misdirected folks who are constantly making
horrendous social blunders without the slightest realization as to what
they are doing.? In addition, unless someone patiently sits down
with them and actually points out that certain things are acceptable and
others are not, they will never figure it out on their own.?

???????????
Now for the non-socially inept, such people are difficult to abide
having around.? Their very awkward nature is grating on the nerves
and we feel embarrassed for them because they do not realize they need
to be embarrassed.?

Fortunately, for all, we
have devised an acceptable solution for all.? It’s called the
Wonderful World of Computers (WWC).? You see, the creator was wise
in dolling out abilities.? It’s a suspected fact that those who
are exceptionally weak in some areas are stronger in others.? Well
these hopeless geeks and dweebs are really good at doing things with
computers.? I mean REALLY good.? Moreover, they enjoy it, too.?
On the computer, they can talk to people in a strong and confident way,
and they can lose themselves in realistic artificial worlds game
designers have lovingly made especially for them.?

Some see this as
unhealthy escapism.? Bah, says I.? If they function well in
the computer world, and if we need people who know how to work with
computers to keep modern society working, then this is a healthy
solution for everyone.? It keeps the socially inept out of an
environment they cannot handle and places them in one in which they
exceed.? Everyone walks away feeling good.???
