“The apparel oft proclaims the man.” This famous quote by
William Shakespeare in his play entitled Hamlet is very true of every
person in every occupation. What we wear makes a statement to the rest
of the world. However, it is not always the same declaration that every
one sees.? We must be careful that what we proclaim in our
habiliments is what our Christian witness says we are. The clothing we
wear usually depends on what our lifestyles are, and what our
personality is.

We
usually dress a certain way because of our age and maturity. A
seven-year-old may wear mismatching pants; shirt and possibly socks out
in public and not be ashamed of it. Yet you would hardly ever see a
grown adult dressed like this, especially in society. If this person
tried to interview for a good job wearing what was described above, he
most likely would not be accepted because of some judgment of his
maturity. Our apparel declares to the world how mature we are.

On
the other hand, we may attire in a certain fashion because of our
lifestyles. A person who always wears suits might be seen as a very
formal businessman. A man who dresses in overalls and dirty boots might
be seen as a farmer. A college student might wear something comfortable
to him or her, such as jeans, a sweater, and some sneakers, not
necessarily caring what people see them as; A homeschooler, possibly the
same way. An athlete may wear some clothing that is really short and
tight because they would want to be able to move as fast as possible
without having to worry about clothing getting in the way. A punk rocker
may wear leather, black clothing, a wild hairdo such as a Mohawk, and
possibly some chains. We all wear different accouterments for different
reasons and are seen by the world in diversified ways.

Clothes
communicate a message to everyone around us. The punk rocker’s message
says that he is a rebel to everyday society. The farmer’s
communication says that he works very hard. The college student and
homeschooler’s message says that comfortably apart of society. We must
choose our messages through what we wear very wisely. We must assert
ourselves as a pleasing person to gain in our witness.
