Monday, July 21st, 2003 by joelI have decided that my
apartment is its own microcosm.? As an official microcosm, it its
own model of the universe.? This is kind of a post-modern model.?
It incorporates elements of actual cosmology with the more whimsical
mythological models.? For one thing, I am Zeus, lord of my
universe.? My roommate is Hades, lord of the underworld.? As
such, his realm is the land of the dead and, of course, the underworld.?
The underworld is situated in the bathroom.? The land of the dead
is the side of the apartment with the couches, coffee table, TV, and
entertainment center.? It’s a comfortable little afterlife.?
My room is known as ?the wasteland’.? The implications should
be obvious.? The land of the living is on the other side of the
?Nile’, which is the beam that cuts the apartment in half.?
That’s where the computers and gaming area are.? There is a stomp
box in the corner.? The center of the universe is the kitchen.?
The refrigerator in the kitchen is the exact center.? We often
spend large amounts of time gazing into the depths of the universe’s
center hoping to glimpse something that will fill the void within us.?
There’s a container of coleslaw that has been sitting at the center of
the universe since time began (i.e. when we got the apartment).? It
is my fear that it will someday rise to overthrow us and rule
independently.

The other characters that wander in and out of our universe also have
their names.? I have a robot that wanders around beeping at us.?
He is the wandering sprite of the microcosm.? Mike is the black
hole.? The landlord is one of the ancient Titans who come to visit
us on occasion.

Now I realize that all this symbolism is just something I do to elevate
my life from the mundane thing it is to give it some sort of deeper
meaning, but hey, it is MY apartment.
